There and Back again (2025) – Solo 1/3 tone Sonido 13 piano

Microtonal piano journey using the 18-tone Sonido 13 system in San Luis Potosí, Mexico

There and Back Again explores dense harmonic textures, overtone layering, and melodic emergence within a 1/3rd-tone tuning system developed by Julián Carrillo. Performed on a rare 18-tone-per-octave piano, the piece blurs the lines between consonance and dissonance, creating a sound world where melodies shimmer in and out of spectral overtones. Inspired by “wall of sound” techniques, this work allows chords to act as harmonic environments, revealing ghost-melodies that float above the fundamentals. The result is both an emotional return to the piano and an exploration of unfamiliar harmonic terrain.
