in some loung (2018) – digital keyboard works in just intonation and non-12-tone symmetry
in some loung is a solo album by Noah Dean Jordan, composed and performed on a digital keyboard using a wide range of just intonation tunings. Exploring the keyboard not as a fixed 12-tone instrument but as a malleable, symmetrical interface, the album experiments with non-12-note tuning sets, extended just intonation scales, and intervallic structures that challenge conventional harmonic frameworks.
Through these explorations, the digital piano becomes a paradoxical space—familiar in form, yet uncannily strange in sound. Each piece unfolds within a distinct tuning environment, revealing unexpected relationships between symmetry, dissonance, and melodic motion. Entirely digital, yet deeply acoustic in its sensitivity to resonance and tuning, in some loung reimagines the piano as a speculative instrument—fluid, fractal, and unconcerned with tonal resolution.
